The Road to Better Health….
Changes come in your life....whether or not you are prepared for them.
Six weeks ago I walked into the Dr's office after having a couple of weeks of not feeling as well as I should. Like most of us, I detest having to go to the Dr because you never know what you are going to find out. But on that day I was so weak that I just wanted him to find out what was wrong.....
When I got back in the room the Nurse immediately tested my blood sugar level....and what the meter read floored both Debbie and I.😯
Honestly, I am too embarrassed to admit how high the number was because I should have known or at least felt it. But when the Dr came in he uttered the words I feared he would.....Mr. Kilgore, you are a Diabetic and you need to make some pretty big changes in your lifestyle.
In some sense I was relieved that it wasn't something much more dreadful….but then came the realization that IT COULD become more dreadful if I didn’t take hold of my life, my eating habits and take better care of myself.
So….change I did! I know this is a long journey at this point, but all long journeys begin with small steps. I no longer drink soft drinks, I stay mainly with chicken and fish, I eat a lot of cauliflower, broccoli, green beans, and any bread I eat is whole grain. Little by little I learn what is good and what is not.
Since I began my journey of being a diabetic, I have lost 31 pounds….I feel better about myself and I have the pep back in my step. I’ve had to get a new wardrobe as what I was wearing no longer fits. (That’s a good thing!) The down side is that I let my blood sugar level get so out of whack it did affect my eyesight a bit to the point where glasses are an all-the-time need now.
I’m fast approaching my 61st birthday and I still have much more I want to see and do. (My wife reminds me that I still haven’t grown up yet). But I can’t do any of these things if I don’t take care of myself.
I know I am not the only person in my circle of friends (real life and Facebook) who is facing this on a daily basis. I’ve received many good tips from friends who have family/friends who deal with this daily and if you have ideas, feel free to drop me line. The more information we all have, the better we can all live our lives.
So….come along with me as I travel down this middle child’s road to better health.
